Welcome From Our Co-Chairs:

Welcome to Portland the City of Roses!

On behalf of the Portland Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management, we welcome you to the NHRMA 71st Annual Conference & Tradeshow, September 30 - October 2, 2009.

Our theme - Juggling The Generations - seems to be particularly appropriate this year as the "Gen Whys" are entering the workforce in significant numbers, the economy is delaying the retirement of the "Boomer" and "Silent" Generations and, as a result, the next several years will see four or even five generations working together.

Juggling The Generations also represents your life journey as Human Resource professionals. Our goal is to provide you with necessary tools and meaningful information to help navigate the diverse generational mix in today's workforce. Whether an experienced human resource executive or new to the field, our conference tracks will help you understand differences in each generation's history, style and perspective.

Our pre-conference workshops cover many topics, providing knowledge for our changing workforce. Please join us for a wide selection of workshops including such topics as "Practical and Effective Pay Systems for Navigating Tough Times" and "Lawsuits and Liability in Multigenerational Workplaces". Concurrent Workshops will provide learning opportunities in the areas of Recruitment and Selection, Risk Management, Global Perspectives, Organizational Development, Strategic Management, Total Rewards, and Native American - Native Alaskan Human Resources Management.

For the first time the NHRMA Conference will have a new tract "Native American -Native Alaskan Human Resource Management". We are inviting participation from all tribes and tribal organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, and will provide workshops that address issues that are both unique to these sovereign nations and involve ethnic, religious and generational issues for all employers.

On Wednesday, concurrent with the workshops and prior to the keynote address there will be an all day event for "Human Resource Professionals in Transition". This program will be an event separate from the NHRMA Conference, but utilizing the same facilities, and will provide workshops and concurrent sessions designed to help those human resource professionals who are in transition, seeking career changes or looking for other opportunities.

Robb Van Cleave, SHRM National Chair, will open the conference, providing information on the changes at SHRM and looking to the future of our profession.

Networking opportunities are interspersed throughout the conference - again, people working together for a common goal. The conference provides an opportunity for both career and personal development for the human resource professional.

Wednesday evening's event will be at the Portland Art Museum. You will enjoy one of the best art museums in the nation, light entertainment, fine food and the opportunity to view the art and network with other human resource professionals. Thursday evening there will be an entertaining event at the Oregon Convention Center with Portland's version of Cirque du Soleil! We'll close the conference on Friday on a high note with an inspirational message from Willamette University's infamous football coach, Mark Speckman. We look forward to seeing you at the 2009 NHRMA Conference!
